Whether you’ve been a member for decades or you are brand new to our movement, we need your help to build a better future for all Albertans. Health care that works. Schools that teach our kids to thrive. A prosperous future for Alberta. If these matter to you, please attend.
Join me and the Calgary-Elbow NDP for our annual general meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23 at Windsor Park Community Association.
Don’t let the word “meeting” scare you off. Yes, we will take care of a little important business and elect a new executive, but it is also a great opportunity to meet, and even be part of, the team working toward winning the next election!
And, of course, there will be an opportunity for you to financially contribute to winning government in 2027 and making a better Alberta possible.
This meeting is for Alberta NDP members only. You can renew or sign up for your membership here.
Please RSVP if you are planning to attend. I hope to see you there!
Connecting conversations
Every third Thursday of the month we have the opportunity for some informal and enlightening conversations during pub night at Marda Loop Brewing Co.
Always engaging and sometimes surprising, at last month’s pints and politics evening folks wanted to talk about communication strategies for getting our message out to Albertans. Everyone agreed these are challenging times in trying to break through the noise of everything that is happening.
Traditional media is not the powerhouse it once was. Misinformation dominates some popular social media channels and are people even interested in politics that builds a better future?
These conversations are important and enlightening. Join us on Thursday, April 17 for a Pints and Politics pub night at Marda Loop Brewing Co., 3523 18th St SW.
Please RSVP is you are planning to attend.
Tariff chaos can still cause harm
Although Canada may have avoided the worst of U.S. tariffs unveiled on Wednesday, the impact of previously announced tariffs is already being felt across Alberta and the country.
While Canada was not on the list of countries being hit with a 10 per cent minimum baseline tariff on all goods coming into the U.S., tariffs already placed on Canadian steel and aluminum remain, and a levy on Canadian automobiles that went into effect midnight Wednesday.
Many workers in our province and across Canada will be hurt by these tariffs. Small, medium and large businesses will be impacted.
Certainly, this is not the time for anyone to claim victory or stand down. If we don’t act now, key industries will suffer. We must be resolved and steadfast in our efforts to support local, Alberta, and Canadian businesses.
Alberta must stand with the all other provinces and be part of Team Canada, to work with the federal government and the other premiers to develop a short and long-term strategy in the face of these tariffs.
We must strengthen our market, work strategically with the U.S., expand global trade, and attract top talent.
The Alberta NDP has a plan for living in a tariff world that focuses on building strong Canadian markets for selling goods and services, along with a strong domestic market that supports Canadians from coast to coast to coast. The plan also includes dealing with the United States. We must negotiate with America, but we cannot be lapdogs.
I am confident in Albertans, in Canadians, that if we continue to come together, our strength will preserve. There is hope for a better future and a strong and prosperous province.
Lilac Festival
Let’s end this note on the bright side!
In less than two months we will have the opportunity to enjoy one of the best free one-day events in the city.
The 4th Street Lilac Festival features music, activities for all ages and more than 500 vendors offering artisan crafts, imported wares, and much more.
You can even stop by the Calgary-Elbow table to say hello!
The 4th Street Lilac Festival is Sunday, June 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on 4th Street between 12th Avenue and Elbow Drive. Sign up to crew the Alberta New Democrat’s booth at one of Calgary’s best street festivals. It will be a great day talking to our neighbours about a better, prosperous Alberta where we can all thrive.
